Checking the Ballast
DANGER
Shock Hazard
Capacitors are capable of discharging high voltage that
will result in death or serious injury. Always turn off the
light switch, shut down the engine and allow capacitors
time to discharge before servicing.
The ballast consists of a ballast transformer, and a
capacitor. Generally, the capacitor will be the cause of a
ballast problem.
To check whether the ballast transformer or capacitor has
failed:
1. Turn off the lights and shut down the engine.
2. If the light tower is in the raised position, lower the
light tower.
3. Allow capacitor time to discharge.
4. Remove front cover from the trailer.
5. Determine which ballast corresponds with which
fixture.
6. Remove the screws (C, Figure 29) and cover (D,
Figure 29) from the ballast box corresponding to the
affected fixture.
Note: Figure 29 shows the items for light fixtures 1
and 2. Other fixtures are similar.
7. Check the transformer:
A. Start the engine and turn on the light.
B. Using an AC voltmeter capable of safely
measuring up to 1,000 volts, connect one probe
of the voltmeter to the ground screw where the
green wire is connected (A, Figure 29), and the
other probe to the input side (white wire labeled
"Cap") of the capacitor (B, Figure 29).
C. The voltmeter should read 550 to 600 volts.
D. Turn off the light and shut down the engine.
E. If the voltage is not in this range, replace
the ballast transformer. See Replacing The
Ballast Transformer.
8. Check the capacitor:
A. Disconnect the red wire (E, Figure 29) and the
black wire (F, Figure 29) from the 2-port lever
locks.
B. Start the engine.
C. Using an AC voltmeter capable of safely
measuring up to 1,000 volts, connect one probe
of the voltmeter to the ground screw where the
green wire is connected (A, Figure 29), and
the other probe to the output side (white wire
labeled "Lamp") on the capacitor (G, Figure
29).
D. The voltmeter should read 360 to 440 volts.
E. Shut down the engine.
26
F. Re-connect the red wire (E, Figure 29) and
the black wire (F, Figure 29) to the 2-port lever
locks.
G. If the voltage is not in this range, replace the
capacitor. See Replacing the Capacitor.
9. Complete replacement of failed part(s).
10. Re-install the cover (D, Figure 29) with screws (C,
Figure 29).
11. Test the new ballast transformer and / or capacitor to
ensure proper operation.
Note: If you have difficulty in performing this
procedure, or if the results of this procedure do not
match those described, contact your Allmand Dealer,
or the Allmand Service Department.
Replacing the Capacitor
DANGER
Shock Hazard
Capacitors are capable of discharging high voltage that
will result in death or serious injury. Always turn off the
light switch, shut down the engine and allow capacitors
time to discharge before servicing.
Light tower trailers equipped with metal halide bulbs
require a ballast transformer and capacitor to operate.See
Specifications for the correct ballast transformer and
capacitor.
To replace the ballast capacitor:
1. Turn off the lights, and shut down the engine.
2. If the light tower is in the raised position, lower the
tower.
3. Allow capacitor time to discharge.
4. Remove front cover from the trailer.
5. Determine which ballast corresponds with which
fixture.
Note: Figure 29 shows the items for light fixtures 1
and 2. Other fixtures are similar.
6. Remove the screws (C, Figure 29) and cover (D,
Figure 29) from the ballast box corresponding to the
affected fixture.
7. Remove the white wire labeled "Cap" (B, Figure 29)
and white wire labeled "Lamp" (G, Figure 29) from the
capacitor (H, Figure 29).
8. Remove the nut (J, Figure 29), washer (K, Figure
29), the capacitor clamp (L, Figure 29) and the
capacitor (H, Figure 29). Properly dispose of the
capacitor, following federal, state, local or province
environmental regulations.
9. Place the new capacitor (H, Figure 29) in the
capacitor clamp (L, Figure 29), and install on the
carriage bolt (M, Figure 29). Secure with nut (J,
Figure 29) and washer (K, Figure 29).
10. Re-connect the white wire labeled "Cap" (B, Figure
29) and white wire labeled "Lamp" (G, Figure 29)
from the capacitor (H, Figure 29).
