Never clean the Puncture Dilator device while the dilator is in
position in the neck. Always clean the dilator after it has been
removed.
Caution: Federal (USA) law restricts this device to sale by or on
the order of a physician or licensed speech pathologist.
COMPLICATIONS
Although rare, the following complications have been identified
to occur with silicone prosthetic devices of the Blom-Singer
type. They include: stoma contamination or infection, which
may require removal of the dilator and/or use of appropriate
antibiotics; accidental inhalation of a prosthetic device into the
airway, which may require removal by a physician; inhalation of
liquids through a puncture into the airway, which may cause the
patient to cough; inflammatory reaction around the puncture site
and formation of granulation tissue; puncture dilation resulting
in leakage of fluids around the device; dislodgment of the device
and subsequent closure of the tracheoesophageal puncture;
intractable leakage around the device, requiring surgical revision
or closure of the puncture; dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.
