discard and replace it with a new tube. Patients should consult a clinician if the tube no longer
fits properly (e.g. difficulty inserting the tube), if they have difficulty breathing with the tube in
place, or if they experience inflammation, infection, bleeding, discharge, or excessive coughing
while using the tube.
POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS
Complications that require potential removal of the tube, cleaning, and/or medical treatment
include but are not limited to: stoma contamination/infection, accidental inhalation of an
inappropriately sized tube into the airway, structural failure from excessive usage and/or
cleaning, and obstruction of the tube by mucus.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Please refer to the diagrams at the front of this instruction manual.
Wash hands with soap and water prior to inserting or removing the tube. The user should be
positioned in front of a mirror with a bright light shining directly on the stoma (Diagram 1).
Insertion of the Laryngectomy Tube
1. If desired, apply a small amount of medical grade, water-soluble lubricant to the rim of the
stoma to help with insertion (Diagram 2).
2. If needed, slightly fold or compress the insertion tip of the tube to conform to the contour of
the tracheostoma (Diagram 3).
3. Insert the insertion tip of the tube to the lower rim of the stoma and insert completely into
the stoma until its larger funnel shaped end rests against the peristomal skin (Diagram 4).
Attaching an Optional Laryngectomy or Tracheostomy Tube Holder (sold separately)
1. Attach the straps by passing them through the openings in the side of the tube such that the
tabs on the straps point away from the tube (Diagram 5).
2. Pass the straps around the back of the neck and velcro or tie to secure. The straps should be
loose enough to permit one finger width between the backside of the straps and the surface
of the neck.
Removal of the Laryngectomy Tube
1. If using a tube holder, untie or release the holder straps (Diagram 6).
2. Remove the tube from the stoma (Diagram 7).
Attachment or Removal of Accessory Devices (StomaSoft™ models only)
To insert an accessory device: hold the outer rim of the accessory device and press into the top
of the tube until fully seated (Diagram 8).
To remove an accessory device: hold the top of the tube and grasp the outer rim of the
accessory device. Pull until free from the tube (Diagram 9).
Cleaning and Disinfection of the Laryngectomy Tube
1. Remove the tube from the tracheostoma and remove any attached devices.
2. Rinse the tube under warm running tap water.
3. Soak the tube in hot water (122-140°F / 50–60°C) containing at least two drops of dish soap
per 8 oz. (235mL) of water for at least 15 minutes.
4. Remove tube from the soap and water solution and rinse under warm running tap water.
Gently clean the inside and outside of the tube with a cleaning foam swab (sold separately
from InHealth Technologies). Do not use cotton swabs to clean the tube as fibers may be left
behind (Diagram 10).
5. If the tube is fenestrated (StomaSoft™ only), clean the fenestrations in a similar manner using
the Blom-Singer Cleaning Brush (sold separately from InHealth Technologies) (Diagram 11).
