7.2 WORK DEPTH
Work depth adjustment of the machine is established by the position
of the levelling rollers, of the skids or of the front wheels (optional).
7.2.1 LEVELLING ROLLERS
The levelling rollers are used individually with fi xed harrows, or in
pairs in the case of folding harrows, as shown in the table below.
Various types of roller can be used, depending on the characteristics
of the soil. However, the function of all the rollers is to level and pack
down the soil while increasing the degree to which this latter is crumbled
on the surface.
Packer Roller (Fig.23)
This can be successfully used in very varied conditions, even when the
soil is fat or damp.
It is advisable to prepare heavy soils in combination with a Seed drill.
Possesses a great levelling and crumbling effect on both the surface
and at depth.
Dimensions: D = 450; D = 500; D = 600.
Spiropacker Roller (Fig.24)
Comprises a spiral bar wrapped around a central shaft.
It is particularly suitable for light, sandy soils and leaves a fair amount
of clods on the surface, settling the ground at depth and forming the
most suitable seed bed for the seed drill in certain situations.
Dimensions: D = 500.
Cage Roller (Fig.25)
Used for soil of medium texture that is not too damp.
Allows the tilling depth to be controlled, levels the tilled soil, refi nes
the seed bed, achieving an optimum ground preparation and making
it even more effi cacious.
D = 370/6; D = 450/8; D = 450/8T;
D = 550/10T.
To till the ground in a more superfi cial way and to obtain fi ner clods, it
is advisable to use roller 450/8T, since it has more tubes.
Spiked Roller (Fig.26)
This consists of a cylinder equipped with a set of long teeth made of
shaped rods, 4 of which are installed per work section, with a pitch of
about 250 mm.
It is used for all types and in all soil conditions.
It does not pack down the soil, but leaves it aerated and levelled.
It is mainly used for preparing soil that has already been ploughed
at depth.
Dimensions: D = 600
7.2.2 ROLLER-SCRAPER PLATES
The soil scraper has the scraper plates (1 Fig.27) made of wear-
proof material to clean caked soil from the roller.
They are installed on shaped supports fi xed to the rear bar of the
roller.
Correct assembly is achieved by mounting the scraper plates on
the soil scraper, and tightening the bolt (2 Fig.28) to fi x the plate to
the desired distance from the roller.
The recommended distance between the scraper plate and
the roller is 2/3 mm.
