MAINTENANCE IN CASE OF ENGINE INACTIVITY
In case of long periods of engine inactivity
(more than 6 months), carry out the
GB
protective engine treatment. If the engine
is not used for a further period of time,
check the need to repeat the protective
treatment for other 6 months (see section
"Engine protection in case of long periods
of inactivity" on page 21).
CHECKS AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF ENGINE INACTIVITY
Before starting the engine, it is good
practice to carry out some checks.
1 - Check that there are no visible leakages
or damage to the engine components and
the relevant electric connections.
2 - Remove and thoroughly clean any
foreign material deposits on engine
components.
3 - Check the level and status of fluids: fuel
(see page 26), DEF fluid (see page 35),
engine oil (see page 51), coolant (see page
57).
WASHING THE ENGINE
It is recommended to wash the engine
only in case of real need.
Before washing the engine, properly
protect its components.
Washing must be carried out with engine
off and cold.
Do not aim water jets or steam jets
towards:
- Cable joints and engine wiring electrical
connectors.
- Alternator, starter motor.
- Fuel injection circuit devices.
- Electro-injectors.
English
In any case, it is advisable to start the
engine and bring it to the operating
temperature of 70°C - 80°C (158°F -
176°F) for five minutes at least on a
monthly basis.
4 - Check the integrity of air filter, belt,
rubber sleeves and relevant fixing clips (in
case of replacements, proceed as indicated
in the routine maintenance tables).
In case of need, contact a workshop
authorised by VM MOTORI FCA ITALY.
- Electrical sensors installed on the engine.
- Electronic engine management control
unit.
- Engine intake air filter and related mass
flow sensor.
- Components of exhaust gas after-
treatment system (ATS).
When washing is complete, remove all
protections, start the engine and leave it
running at idle until it is completely dry.
