3) Put the outboard motor in the "N" (Neutral) gear. Loosen
the shift rod joint nut and lock nut to disconnect the shift
rod A and B.

4) Put the outboard motor in the "R" (Reverse) gear, and push

the shift rod B of the gear case assembly down to the
lowermost (i.e. reverse) position.

5) Turn the lock nut to bring the distance from the end of the
lock nut to the end of the shift rod B to 8 mm or more.

6) Turn the shift rod joint nut to align the bottom end of the
5
shift rod A with the bottom end of the shift rod joint nut.
7) Tighten the shift rod joint nut up to the lock nut position of
6
the shift rod B, and tighten the lock nut securely.
After adjustment, check whether the shift moves smoothly.

• Be sure to tighten the shift rod joint nut against the shift
8
rod B with the shift and the shift rod B in the "R" (Reverse)
position.

8) If the length where the shift rod joint nut sets on the shift
rod A is too small or if the shift rod joint nut comes out of
10
the shift rod A by tightening the shift rod joint nut against
the shift rod B 8 mm or more, check the shift rod A and the
11
shift rod B for bend or other damage. Replace the shift rod
A and/or the shift rod B if necessary (P. 11-19 and 12-2).

Remote Control Cable [Shift Side] Adjustment:

When the shift does not move properly after adjusting the shift
rod (P. 3-17), adjust as follows.

1) Remove the engine cover (P. 4-2).

2) Remove the remote control cable [shift side] from the shift
16
link B.
3) Set the shift link B and the outboard motor in the "N"
17
(Neutral) gear, and check whether the remote control cable
[shift side] sets on the shift link B smoothly. If not, adjust as
18
follows.

4) Put the outboard motor in the "F" (Forward) gear, and
return it slowly to the "N" (Neutral) position.
20
5) Holding the gear in the position described in step 3, mark
the inner cable with (A) at the outer cable seal end.
